    "When can a new-born brand claim a brush with success? Perhaps when 11,800 pairs of its signature sandals are sold in one single island outlet in a year as in the case of LAK, a recently launched Greek brand featuring smart, yet edgy casualwear and accessories. For those not planning to visit the Mykonos shop, the sandals are also available at Colette in Paris and 10 Corso Como in Milan.

    "This is a Greek brand with a global head," says Lakis Gavalas, the brand's founding father. Gavalas is credited with introducing major apparel brands to the Greek market in the early 1980s, while the Kellylakis, a new edition of the Hermès Kelly bag carries his own creative twist.

    Gavalas currently leads a team of designers working on what he describes as "basic clothes with a point of view.""Being a Greek brand is hard, but we have to grab the opportunity now that consumers and industry folk are looking for new things," said Gavalas. "Besides, today people don't really care where things are made."
